LEGO 3862 : Harry Potter Hogwarts

I bought for my kids a few years ago and never gave to them. So, you’ll see a -1 or a -2 next to the part if one or two are missing.

There is a small dent and a scrape along the top edge of the box. In the book that lists the pieces, there are checkmarks in pencil from checking.

I put all the pieces in baggies since they are small. May be minor scuffs on pieces from play but looks like it was played once. One of the small gray figures is missing a 2-3 other small miscellaneous pieces. Be the first to race down moving staircases, through secret passageways and back to your commonroom with all of your homework to win!

This family-friendly board game pits up to four players against each other, in a race to turn in their homework first. Along the way, players will have to face shifting stairs, secret passageways, and wizard duels. And since the game board is fully customizable, every single play-through is a new experience. It is simple enough for young children to enjoy, but is also deep enough to engage older kids and even adults.

Players win by being the first to return to their commonroom with all four items intact. But the game is not quite as straightforward as it may sound: players must also contend with all sorts of magical obstacles!

In this way, the game encourages kids to think creatively, as they develop strategies to slow down their opponents. The set also comes with a colorful, step-by-step instruction manual to assist you in building. The die comes with seven tiles, which can be put together in any combination. This allows you to tweak and customize the game’s rules to your liking.

You can also make the game easier or harder, depending on which tiles you include.

You can even use these characters as game pieces, which adds an element of roleplaying to your fun. Then we played it together with my 5 year old son. Both boys could understand and play the game.

I did find that before hand an adult really would need to read thoroughly and analyse the rules. The goal is to get your player to all the classrooms and complete all their homework and then return to their “house”.

You can also block other players when you role certain items on the dice. That way you are not rolling over and over and can’t do anything because you are rolling something that doesn’t apply or benefit you in the game. Also, something we didn’t do, but would be a nice addition would be to ‘earn’ the homework items. That could incorporate more learning–such as spelling, math or history/science questions that must be completed correctly to get that item. The game takes a little time to set up for the first time as you have to build the board base, various classrooms and hallways, and the living quarters for each character. The instructions are clear and the game is easy to build. The rules are simple to read and understand, but the game is engaging. The basic premise of the game is that each player must gather their homework from the various class rooms. It sounds easy enough, but during the game different squares/spaces in the game shift and rotate.

You can go from almost collecting a piece of your homework to being trapped in a dead end.

You can move the people, you move the stairs around, and then you get the stuff inside the game.

You have to block your opponents to stop them from getting what they need to get.

Norris pieces to use in making up your own rules. Building the board was easy enough for them. The game can also be played by just 2 people, so the kids can play even if the grownups have other things to do. The assembled board fits in the box, so you don’t have to dismantle everything after every game. It is however, something that may need to be explained by an adult, as far as how all of the moves on the board can take place. The kids really enjoy the game though, so it is worth it.

We did have some difficulty getting different pieces to fit and stay on the peg part of the leg’s.
